All About Recruitment!
What are the Recruitment Events like?
  • Information Sessions: Our recruitment chairs, Jadyn and KJ, will be conducting a presentation on all things recruitment and DKA! We will also hold questions and answer sessions after the presentation with some of our active members on what life after new membership is like!
  • Speed Dating: We will be answering questions in rotating groups. It's a great opportunity for you to get to know some of our active members and for us to get to know you!
  • Art Night: Some of our active members will be showing of their work across mediums and departments from both in and outside of DKA. It's a great opportunity to see what kind of cinematic interests our society encompasses and for us to get to know how you are as a cinematic artist!
  • Game Night: We will be playing a variety of games in rotating groups. It's a great opportunity to get to know our actives in a more informal and personal way!

Applications are out! To be considered for our Spring 2024 New Member Class, you must submit an application by the 6PM PST on Friday, February 2nd. 

About Applications
 

To be considered for our Spring '24 New Member Class, you must submit a completed application by 6PM on Friday, February 2nd. 

This semester, our application consists of the following:

  1. General Info and Headshot (Does not need to be professional! We just want to be able to put names to all of the faces we meet at events).
  2. 6 short answer questions with minimum word counts of 150 - 300 words (depending on the question).
  3. A brief 1 - 3 minute video introduction 
  4. A supplement of 1 - 3 original works that showcase your talent and cinematic interests
  5. Completion of the submission form, including your interview availability choices (only those who make it through to our third round will be interviewed).

What Happens After Applications are Submitted?
 
Applications will conclude the first round of voting. Applicants will be notified if they will be moving on to the next round via email on Monday (2/5). Those advancing to our second round will be invite to our Blue Chip Dinner on Tuesday, February 6th. The dress code will be Blue Chip will be semi-formal with the event having a more serious, career-focused tone. Please ensure you keep conversation to that you would be comfortable having with coworkers during a work-related event. If you are unable to dress in accordance to the dress code, it is no problem and will not be counted against you!

Following Blue Chip, applicants will be notified if they will be moving on to the third and final round via email on Wednesday, February 7th. Those who are moving on will also be given confirmation of their scheduled 15-minute interview slot. Interviews will take place between 9:00am and 5:30pm on Thursday, February 8th and Friday, February 9th. 

Following interviews, applicants will be notified if we will be offering them a bid for our Spring 2024 New Member Class via email or phone call between 11:00pm on Friday, February 9th and 6:00am on Saturday, February 10th. New members will be expected to attend our Bid Day Welcome on Saturday, February 10th beginning at noon sharp. New members will also have an orientation meeting on Sunday, February 11th, from 3:30 - 4:30pm.
Top Tips for Recruitment:
  • Get to know us.
    • Attend an Information Session and read about our organization on this landing page to gain a greater perspective on what our organization is all about. Attending our Speed Dating, Art Night, and Game Night events is also highly encouraged. These events give us that chance to get to know you outside of what's on your application. You also get to know our actives and get a better sense of what our chapter is like. When attending events, make sure to get to know a variety of people. We pick our new member class as a chapter, every active you meet will be a part of the decision-making process.
       
  • Be yourself.
    • We want to know how you truly are as a person and cinematic artist. We are looking for imaginative, collaborative, and driven cinematic artists of character who can all contribute to our chapter in their own unique way. All backgrounds, experience levels, classes (graduate and undergraduate), majors, and cinematic interests are welcome! We want to learn what makes you special and which of our values you personally excel in.
  • Be mindful about what you say.
    • While we love the societal bonds we have formed through social and fellowship opportunities, we are looking for members who are able to balance work life and social life. We are hoping to find those we envision as both valued friends and collaborators. With this in mind, please keep conversations during recruitment events to those you would feel comfortable having with acquaintances or co-workers.
       
  • Get to know other potential new members.
    • Potential New Members you meeting during the recruitment process could become your new friend, collaborator, or fellow new member classmate. Whatever your journeys may be, we encourage you to get to know each other and have fun during this process together regardless of who receives a bid.
       
  • Make sure your application is submitted on time and completed to the best of your ability.
    • Submitting your application on time is the only requirement you must complete to be considered for a bid into our new member program (during which members are inducted into our chapter as active voting members). Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications we receive, we cannot accept any late or incomplete applications. Please ensure that your applications are proofread and submitted by the deadline. Also be aware of the sharing settings of any PDFs, links, videos or other documents you send so that we can all elements of your application. Applications will be viewed throughout the week following submissions. Please ensure that all elements of your application are shared for anyone with the link to view until February 9th. 
       
  • Ensure that you are able to Fulfill the Commitments of a New Member this Semester.
    • Our New Member Program is a robust, 9-week crash course that ensures all new members are prepared for all National Requirements of becoming inducted and have an easy transition into becoming an active. Please review our New Member Program section for further details.
       
  • Don't Get Discouraged if We are Unable to Extend You a Bid.
    • Unfortunately, we are limited in the size of New Member Class our resources are able to accommodate during each semester's program. If you do not receive a bid, it does not mean that you are any less of a spectacular artist or person. If you do not receive a bid, we highly encourage you to re-apply next season! Some of our members have applied three times before receiving a bid. We also invite a select number of applicants who do not receive a bid to our collaborators list, which is a mailing list for crew-calls and invitations to work with active members on projects. Regardless of whether or not you receive a bid for our new member class or collaborators list, we would love to see you are our general public events which are announce through our mailing list, on our Instagram, and on EngageSC!

After receiving their bid, New Members will begin our 9-week crash course in all things DKA! New Members with meet weekly on Sundays to prepare for our National Exam, participate in bonding activities as a class and with active members, and gain hands-on set experience in several different roles. By the end of the semester, our new members are prepared for life as an active and as a cinematic artist. Requirements and Expectations

 

Our New Members will be expected to complete the following:

  • Attend Our Bid Day Welcome Activity and Evening Ceremony on Saturday, February 10th beginning at 12pm sharp.
  • Attend weekly to Sunday Meetings from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
  • Pay $465 in New Member Dues. (Dues are most expensive as a new member due to the cost of participating in the program and being initiated. Scholarships are available on a need-basis. Our policy is that no member will be unable to participate due to financial incapabilities).
  • Participate in weekly program activities (Scheduled program activities will in no way interfere with academic responsibilities).
  • Complete 20 one on one hang-outs with current active members. (Approximately 2 hangouts a week for at least 30 minutes each).
  • Complete 6 independent set hours with 4 being from set other than your own. 
  • Attend 2 mandatory workshops and 2 cinematic affairs workshops after Sunday meetings from 4:45pm to 5:45pm.
  • Pass the Delta Kappa Alpha National Exam at the end of the program. (Our New Member Program includes weekly lessons and quizzes from our trot educator to ensure every member is well prepare. We have yet to have a member fail the exam. Testing accommodations are also available for members in need).
  • Attend Our Induction Ceremony on Saturday, April 14th from 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Note: Delta Kappa Alpha has a zero-tolerance hazing policy. All activities will be safe, fun, and lighthearted. The physical and mental health of our New Members and their academic success is of the upmost importance. Our program will in no way adversely affect our new members. Scheduling of some activities will be subject to change based on the availability of the New Members. Check out our tentative new member schedule below.

About Delta Kappa Alpha
What is Delta Kappa Alpha?

Delta Kappa Alpha is a values based organization that strives to provide opportunities for professional growth and leadership development for students with an affinity for film, television, and entertainment such as gaming. 

The mission of Delta Kappa Alpha is to foster lifelong character, collaborative and creative storytelling, ethical and productive business practices, philanthropic action, and fraternal bonds by and between students of the cinematic arts.

The vision of Delta Kappa Alpha is to be recognized as the premier institute of upstanding entertainment industry leaders.


 
Who is the Alpha Chapter?

We are the oldest chapter of Delta Kappa Alpha in the world, having been founded at USC in 1936. Since our original founding, our chapter has evolved into a gender-inclusive society for all those with a passion for working in the cinematic arts and entertainment industry.

Currently, our chapter has over 80 members representing a variety of backgrounds, majors and minors (Both SCA and Non-SCA), and industry interests (Both on and off-set). 

Our active members are a part of our rostered voting-members who received bids into our chapter during their respective recruitment seasons and been inducted into our national organization. We also welcome all non-active USC Students to our General Public Events.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How do I join DKA?
    At the beginning of each semester, our chapter conducts recruitment in three rounds. During the first, we hold information sessions and get to know you events and release applications. All those who submit a completed application on time will be considered for New membership. After applications are reviewed those who have made it through to the second round will be invited to our Blue Chip Dinner. After Blue Chip, applicants will be review once more and those who have made it through to the third round will be notified with their scheduled interview window. After interviews, those who have been accepted in for our New Member Class will be extended a bid.
     
  • When is recruitment?
    Information Sessions (You only need to attend on information session):
    • Thursday (8/24) from 2:30pm - 5:30pm on zoom (link will be posted on Instagram)
    • Friday (8/25) from 6:30 - 9:30pm at THH 210
    • Saturday (8/26) from 12:00 - 3:30pm on zoom (link will be posted on Instagram)
          Speed Dating*: Tuesday, January 30th, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm in SGM 101
          Art Night*: Wednesday, January 31st, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm in THH 301
          Game Night*: Thursday, February 1st, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm in THH 301
          Blue Chip: Tuesday, September 5th, from 7:00pm - 9:00pm (Invite Only - Semi-formal dress code)
          Interviews: One 15-minute session between 9:00am and 5:30pm on Thursday, February 8th, or Friday, February 9th.
         
         *Our recruitment events are not required but highly encourage so that you can get to know our chapter and we can get to know you! The only thing that is required for you to be considered for our chapter is submitting an application by the deadline.*
  • I am unable to attend a recruitment events, will that affect my ability to get a bid? 
    Definitely not! We have actives that were unable to attend any events before submitting an application. We leave room in our application for you to make not of what you were unable to attend and why. Also, feel free to let us know at recruitment@usc.dka.org!
     
  • I don't have any semi-formal wear for Blue Chip, is that okay?
    Absolutely! If you are unable to adhere to the dress code for Blue Chip, it will not count against you. 
     
  • When will applications be released?
    Applications for Spring '24 are out!
     
  • When are applications due?
    Applications will be due at 6:00PM on Friday, February 2nd.
     
  • What is a bid?
    A bid is an invitation to join our new member class.
     
  • What is the time commitment of your New Member Program?
    Our New Member Program is about the equivalent of taking another 4 unit class. However, our program scheduling is flexible and members will be excused for any events during which they have class or any other academic/work commitments.
     
  • Why are your New Member Classes so small?
    Our Chapter wants to ensure every new member is receiving a quality experience. In order to do so, we must limit our class sizes based on our monetary limitations and our ability to commit time to each of our new members.
     
  • Is DKA like greek life?
    No, DKA is first and foremost a professional cinematic arts society. Our primary goal is professional and creative development through a diverse, inclusive, and respectful community. 

    We recruit solely based on the passion that prospective members have for cinematic arts and their respect for our community values. 
    While DKA was founded as a professional fraternity, Our organization has evolved into a professional, gender-inclusive society. DKA does have historic traditions, but hey have been altered over time to further reflect our modern values. Also, although DKA host some social events, our organization's purpose is not being social. Our events are only supplemental to our mission of building community.

     
  • Do I need to be in the School of Cinematic Arts to join?
    Absolutely not! We welcome all students from any major or year, undergraduate or graduate, to apply.
